Sony Video: New Sony Projector Can Show, Record Notes Scribbled Onto the Screen
Posted by claudio on Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 23:13:03 CDT (392 reads)
Sony Projector Sony said Monday it will sell a projector that displays and saves notes scribbled onto the images it projects.

The projector comes with two battery-powered infrared pens, which it uses to track what is being written on the screen. Both pens can be tracked at the same time, and each can also be used as a standard computer mouse during presentations.

The company said the projector can be used in classroom settings to save comments written on screen during a lesson, then posted or used in future classes. In business settings, the device can be used as a virtual whiteboard and to save meeting notes directly to a computer.

Sony News: Sony and Nokia still a hit with Asian consumers
Posted by claudio on Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 23:06:55 CDT (271 reads)
Sony News Nokia and Sony remain two of the most powerful brands in Asia despite high profile problems affecting both companies which have sent their market share, revenues and global reputation plummeting in recent months, according to a new piece of research.

Market consultancy Nikkei BP Consulting evaluated 60 global brands in eight countries across Asia in order to compile its annual Brand Asia report for 2012.

    Sony News: Sony's fall and Japan's hang-ups
Posted by claudio on Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 23:05:03 CDT (334 reads)
Sony News Sony's slow but sure descent is also about Japan's obsession with doing things the Japanese way, even if it's the wrong way.

I lived in Japan during the peak of its technological and manufacturing heyday -- from 1983 till 1993. The final eight years in Tokyo. Not only did I visit scores of Japanese electronics and computer companies as a journalist (and analyst) but I was also irresistibly drawn to (read: I spent way too much time in) Akihabara -- Japan's electronics retail Mecca at the time.

The reason for the success of companies like Sony and Panasonic (National brand in Japan) was obvious. They not only designed popular products but were also very good at manufacturing them. Not unlike the U.S. in its industrial heyday.

Sony PSP: OP-ED: It's Too Soon for a PlayStation Vita Price Cut
Posted by claudio on Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 22:54:41 CDT (268 reads)
Sony PSP Sony's new handheld hasn't been off to a great start here or in Japan.

PlayStation Vita has now been available for two months in North America and Europe, and twice as long in Japan. In that time it's failed to make any sort of significant splash as far as sales go -- in Japan, where we receive weekly updates courtesy of Media Create, the system sold less than 9,000 units in each of the first two weeks this month, and it wasn't as if it was doing gangbusters prior to that. Software has done poorly as well, rarely making the top 50 sales charts in Japan; in the U.S., only MLB 12 has been seen in the NPD's top 10, and that is with sales of the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions being combined. All of the Vita's games are also available through the PlayStation Store, so it is unfair to judge the performance of software purely on sales charts that only account for retail. The amount of hardware that has been moved so far, however, does feel like cause for concern.

Sony Audio: Sony intros iPad compatible all-in-one Hi-Fi systems
Posted by claudio on Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 22:47:31 CDT (275 reads)
Sony Audio Desktop Series iPod docks are a dime a dozen, and who better to buy one from than the original inventor of the Walkman? Sony has introduced a new compact Hi-Fi system that is compatible with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. You’ll be able to pop your iDevice into the dock to pump your tunes through the Magnetic Fluid speakers, but if you’re a retro kind of guy there’s a CD player lurking inside as well.

Sony News: Sony sees $2.9 billion loss, new CEO warns of pain
Posted by claudio on Sunday, February 26, 2012 @ 00:11:45 CST (1110 reads)
Sony News Ailing Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp warned it was heading for a bigger-than-expected $2.9 billion annual loss, presenting a daunting task for incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai, who vowed to move quickly to turn things around.

Overtaken by more innovative rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics over the past decade, Sony posted a $2.1 billion net loss for October-December, normally a strong quarter boosted by year-end holiday sales, as it battled a strong yen, flooding in Thailand that ruptured supply chains, and a weak economy.

It also took a one-off charge for exiting a flat panel joint venture with Samsung, and said sales dropped 17 percent to 1.82 trillion yen.

Sony News: Sony to offer Killzone 3 online multiplayer as free-to-play
Posted by claudio on Sunday, February 26, 2012 @ 00:01:55 CST (943 reads)
Sony News If you like the idea of the spectacle of Killzone 3 but can’t justify plopping down $60 for the game, there will soon be a solution for you. A free download will be showing up on the PlayStation Network next week that will allow players to jump into the online multiplayer version of the game. Of course, all the limits that typically come with a free-to-play MMO will be in place.

That is, there will be a level cap (specifically, the level of “Sergeant” will be the highest rank possible). However, for a one-time charge of $14.99, players can max out their character with no limit. That’s still a pretty small price to pay considering it opens up access to not only the base game map but all the additional maps that have been released through DLC packs as well.
